The brake of a car.

Healthy brakes are essential for your driving safety. Your braking system is a mechanical one that requires regular servicing to keep it in great shape. Worn or damaged brakes are one of the leading causes of accidents, as they prevent you from controlling the speed of your car. As your Honda dealer, we’d like you to know some signs that you need to visit us for brake repair.

Your Brake Light Is On

Your Honda has two separate brake lights, one for the ABS and the other for the braking system. Both lights automatically illuminate when you start your engine, and they should then switch off. If either of these lights remains on, this is a sign of trouble. One of the most common causes of an illuminated brake light is a handbrake that’s still engaged.

The ABS is designed to control your wheels if your car skids. It prevents them from locking and enables you to recover quickly. You can still temporarily drive with an ABS problem, but it’s advisable to have it checked right away. Our technicians will identify the cause of the problem and repair it so you can drive safely again.

Leaking Brake Fluid

The braking system depends on brake fluid, which provides the essential hydraulic power to engage the brakes. This fluid is stored in the brake fluid reservoir adjacent to the brake master cylinder. When you hit the brakes, the pressurized brake fluid is pumped into the brake hoses and lines and forces the calipers to clamp against the rotors and stop your car.

A brake fluid leak is often almost impossible to spot, as it’s a thin liquid with a slight yellowing coloring. You might not see a leak, but if your brake pedal becomes easier to press down on, you could be leaking brake fluid. A soft brake pedal is a definite sign that your braking system isn’t working correctly. We can trace the fluid leak and seal it to resolve this problem.

Damaged Brake Booster

Older model cars required muscle power to engage the brakes. As we’ve seen, the brake fluid is pressurized, and drivers had to exert extra pressure when they stepped on the brakes to force the system to work. Modern cars have a brake booster installed, which reduces the effort required when you hit the brakes.

The brake booster uses a vacuum system to generate extra power, and this makes braking easier and more user-friendly. If the brake booster is damaged, its vacuum may have been compromised. Without the pressure provided by the vacuum, stepping on the brake pedal becomes more difficult. We can test the booster and repair or replace it to fix the problem.
