Birmingham, AL, nicknamed the “Magic City” because of its flourishing industrial past, has fantastic tourist attractions that will leave you in awe. Take a drive in a Honda Accord or Pilot and discover incredible landmarks, breathtaking outdoor spaces, and magnificent views.

1. The Sloss Furnaces

The pig iron production at the Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark, started in 1882 and went on for almost a century. Today, the Sloss Furnaces, with its enormous 400-ton blast furnaces, web of pipes, and tall smokestacks at 20 32nd Street North in Birmingham, is the only blast furnace from the twentieth century in the United States that is being conserved and presented as a historic industrial site.

The museum highlights Birmingham’s history and the impact of the iron and steel industry on the city’s growth. The original furnace complex has been completely erased. The oldest building dates back to 1902 and housed the eight steam-driven “blowing engines” that provided air for combustion in the furnaces. The engines are of significant historical importance as they were instrumental in powering America’s Industrial Revolution during the early 1900s.

2. Ruffner Mountain

Ruffner Mountain at 1214 81st Street South in Birmingham is a wonderful place for anyone who loves nature and the great outdoors. Ruffner Mountain covers 1,038 acres of urban forest where countless species of flora and fauna thrive. With 14 miles of trails, including the Overlook Trail, you can explore the mountain and take in breathtaking views of the surroundings.

As you explore, you may also stumble upon remnants of quarries and mining equipment, a reminder of the region’s numerous iron ore mines dating back to the 1880s. Pop in at the Nature Center to learn more about the region’s natural history, view numerous native snakes and turtles, and see several species of raptors.
